Do and Say Resource

The Hwyliaith Do and Say method is an engaging, effective and easy-to-follow approach to using Welsh in everyday life. Each unit:

  • Puts language in context for real-world relevance
  • Uses gestures, body language, tone and movement to make learning memorable
  • Combines short songs, dialogues and videos for a multi-sensory experience.

As the name Hwyliaith suggests, fun is at the heart of everything we do – because enjoyment is essential for successful language learning.

The Hwyliaith resource is split into 5 units

Unit 1

You’ll learn to ask where someone or somewhere is, and how to give a simple reply.

You’ll be introduced to useful verbs and be able to say “yes please” and “no thank you”.

You’ll learn useful everyday phrases related to a café scene, and a short dialogue will help bring your learning to life.

You’ll be introduced to the content gradually with the support of the Do and Say video as well as two café scene videos.

Extended material

You’ll learn how to use the short past tense to report what’s happened.

(All units – except Units 2 and 5 – include extended material, mainly for learners who already have some experience of Welsh.)

Units 2 and 3

You’ll learn more useful verbs, be introduced to some prepositions and be able to practise with household labels to build on Unit 1.

You’ll learn new question forms and everyday phrases for use with children (for example, while reading together).

More songs will be introduced, which you can be listened to and learned as a family.

The Do and Say material continues to provide a foundation for learning new phrases. Short videos accompany both Unit 2 and Unit 3. You’ll pick up practical phrases for daily routines, basic commands, and practise when to use ‘ti’ and ‘chi’.

Extended material

You’ll begin learning to tell the time and practise a short telephone dialogue.

Unit 4

In Unit 4, we’ll extend your knowledge of the past tense, possessions and learn how to talk about possessions.

You’ll be able to ask and answer “What’s wrong?”. Weather vocabulary will also be introduced. More songs are included to reinforce patterns and make learning enjoyable.

Extended material (Unit 4)

You’ll practise reporting on past events using the past tense.

Unit 5

You’ll be introduced to the future tense and begin using more commands. Vocabulary and phrases related to feelings and emotions be added. You’ll enjoy Dere i gael cwtsh ‘da fi, a beautiful song written and performed by Ryland Teifi.

Songs in this unit not only reinforce the new material but also help revise earlier units. Some aspects of grammar, including mutations, are introduced here (though you may notice them appearing earlier too!).

All Units are described in more detail but it’s strongly advised to look and listen to the content first.

“Learning becomes effortless if it’s introduced so that the brain can respond and process the information in a constructive way.”
